The road to the village

Getting there

The road into the mountains, the best time and what to see in the village.

The road to the village

The way to the roof of the world

Khinalug lies in the Quba District in the north-east of Azerbaijan, high in the mountains of the Greater Caucasus. The way here runs from the town of Quba along a mountain road built in 2006: it winds above the gorges and becomes part of the experience itself. It is best to go in an off-roader or with a local driver — especially in bad weather.

When to go

Summer in the mountains

The best time to go is from late spring to early autumn, when the slopes are green, the passes are open, and the village is warm and lively. In winter Khinalug is especially beautiful under snow, but the road becomes hard and dangerous. In any case it is worth bringing warm clothes: even in summer the evenings are cool at such a height.

What to see

In the village and around

In Khinalug you walk unhurriedly: climb the 'roof-streets', look in at the old mosques, admire the panorama of the valley and the snowy peaks, get to know the daily life and crafts of the mountain people. Here you can stay in a guesthouse, taste the local cuisine and hear living Khinalug speech.

The houses stand in steps on the steep slope, one above another. The flat roof of the lower house becomes the yard and street for the house standing above — so the whole village fits on the slope.
