A stone nest of a village more than two kilometres high: one of the highest, most ancient and most distinctive settlements of the Caucasus, where people speak a language found nowhere else on earth.

About

A village on the roof of the world

Khinalug clings to a steep slope of the Greater Caucasus at about 2,200 metres — one of the highest continuously inhabited villages of Azerbaijan and of the whole Caucasus. Its stone houses rise in steps, and the flat roof of one of them serves as the yard and the street for the house standing above.

It is a very ancient place: people have lived here for thousands of years, and by tradition since the time of Caucasian Albania. For centuries Khinalug was almost cut off from the world: the road to the village came only in 2006. It was this isolation that preserved what makes the village unique — its language, its way of life and its people. This site is about Khinalug.

About the village
Beneath the clouds

Where the silence winters

In winter Khinalug sinks into snow, and the stone houses, pressed against one another like one great nest, hold the warmth against the wind and the cold. Smoke from the hearths curls over the roofs, and all around there is only mountain, sky and the silence of the high country.

About village life

This site is cultural and educational. Most of the photographs are authentic; a few atmospheric images (the village in winter, a hearth, the moving of flocks) were created with AI. Figures and dates are given from available sources.
